A map of Silicon Alley in March 2006.  I arrived in NYC 4 months later, and I used this map to hunt potential job openings as I anticipated my arrival. I was accepted to a comp sci MS program at Columbia at that time, but a few wise people told me I’d learn more if I got a job in tech instead. Not many of these companies are still independent.
